ABG Foundation provides Tk5 lakh each to four journalists, families

The Anvir Bashundhara Group (ABG) Foundation has provided Tk5 lakh each to four journalists and their families, including two ailing journalists and the families of two deceased journalists, at an event in Dhaka on Friday.

The cheques were handed over at the annual general meeting of the Bangladesh Secretariat Reporters Forum (BSRF) at Shaheed Nurul Amin Khan Memorial (Multipurpose) Hall in the capital.

The beneficiaries were ailing journalist Amanur Rahman, the family of ailing journalist Rakib Uddin, and the families of deceased journalists Humayun Kabir Khokon and Talukdar Harun.

Speaking at the cheque handover ceremony, president of Bashundhara Kings and EWPD DMD (Accounts and Finance) Imrul Hasan said journalists were the mirror of society and highlighted the need for their financial security.

“ABG is always beside journalists. The activities of the ABG Foundation are expanding across the country,” he said, adding that Sayem Sobhan Anvir’s inspiration was driving the foundation’s activities.

“We consider ourselves fortunate to be able to do this for journalists today,” Imrul Hasan said.

Amanur Rahman expressed gratitude to the ABG Foundation, saying that the difficulties faced during illness or hardship could only be understood by those experiencing them.

Sharmeen Sultana Rina, wife of deceased journalist Humayun Kabir Khokon, said she had been struggling with her children since her husband died of Covid-19.

She said the assistance came at a time when the family was going through severe hardship and described the assistance as a major relief.

Nasrin Jahan, wife of journalist Rakib Uddin, thanked the ABG Foundation for supporting her ailing husband and standing by journalists.

Touhid Harun, son of deceased journalist Talukdar Harun, welcomed the initiative and expressed hope that the group would continue to support journalists.

BSRF-ABG Media Award-2026

BSRF President Masudul Haque said the ABG Foundation had responded to the forum’s call for support and thanked it for standing beside journalists.

He said the BSRF was also going to organise the BSRF-ABG Media Award-2026 for the first time with ABG’s sponsorship.

A total of 10 awards will be given — five for reporting on administration and five for investigative journalism on any subject. Each award carries prize money of Tk1 lakh.

He said ABG Group had also expressed interest in sponsoring the award ceremony for the next five years.

Current and former BSRF leaders and other members were present at the event.
